taulfo Mango Fruit Box | Exotic Fruits
If you are accustomed to the fibrous Tommy Atkins mango, which is the most commonly consumed variety in the United States, then you might be surprised by the creamy, custardy texture of the Ataulfo Mango Fruit Box or honey mango. This mango is not fibrous and has a buttery and elegant texture, especially when it is fully ripe. Therefore, it is a popular choice for eating out of hand, as well as for making smoothies and shakes. Recently, I prepared a lassi with one and it turned out to be almost perfect.
Mangoes of the Ataulfo variety have an oval form, a slightly crooked neck, and a golden yellow skin and meat. The Ataulfo mango is smaller and less fibrous than other mangoes, but it nevertheless has the same tough exterior and sweet, juicy flesh as other mango varieties. When the Ataulfo mango is mature, it will have a delicious aroma and its skin will wrinkle ever so slightly.
Ataulfo Mango Manila Review
Ataulfo mangoes are in season from early spring to late autumn. Mangifera indica Ataulfo mangoes are a prominent Mexican cultivar thanks to the promotion of the trademarked Champagne® variety. Mangoes of the Ataulfo kind are the same across the board, although not all Champagne mangoes are Ataulfo. Honey mangoes, also known as Nam Dok Mai in Thailand, are sometimes referred to as Manila mangoes outside of Thailand. Mangoes of the Ataulfo kind are polyembryonic, like those grown in the Philippines; its central stone contains two seeds rather than one.

In the 1700s, Portuguese explorers transported mangoes to South America from Brazil. From there, they made their way to Mexico. Mangoes were already in Mexico a century before they were introduced by the Spanish. The Ataulfo mango originated in the southern Soconusco region of Mexico, in the state of Chiapas, near the border with Guatamala, as a consequence of cross-pollination between multiple types (including an Indian variety). Grower Ataulfo Morales Gordillo inspired the plant’s name.
Southern and central Mexico are the primary regions for growing delicious mangos, with Chiapas being the leading producer. As with select Italian cheeses and French champagne, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property has granted the Soconusco region of Chiapas the designation of origin for Ataulfo mango. The mild to warm temperature of California and Florida is ideal for the cultivation of Ataulfo mangoes, which are farmed in small quantities there.
